The European Green Deal presents a roadmap for making the EU’s economy sustainable, turning environmental challenges into opportunities, with a long-term goal of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.

The European Commission will soon present its “fit for 55” package, aimed at achieving a 55% Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emissions reduction target by 2030. Road transport, which today accounts for a fifth of the EU’s GHG emissions, will need to reduce them by 90% by 2050. As part of the package, sectoral legislation will be revised to put the EU on track to cut overall emissions.

Funding programmes such as the Just Transition Mechanism seek to overcome the economic and social costs of the climate transition in the most vulnerable regions. Climate policies need to be deeply intertwined with a balanced strategy that encompasses environmental, economic, and social policies.

However, is the transition towards a low-emissions mobility inclusive and affordable to all? How can we ensure that it will be a just transition?

In this webinar promoted by the FMS members, we will try to explore the following aspects of this wide subject:

  • Transport decarbonisation: what does it mean for society?
  • Technological approaches: what do they mean for the consumers?
  • Revised CO2 emission standards: opportunities and risks.
  • Alternative fuels: a necessity to meet the sector’s growth?

The list of confirmed speakers includes:

  • MEP Dominique RIQUET, FMS co-chair
  • MEP Ismail ERTUG, FMS co-chair
  • Alexandre PAQUOT, Head of road transport unit, DG CLIMA, European Commission
  • Axel VOLKERY, Deputy Head of sustainable and intelligent transport unit, DG MOVE, European Commission
