Last Night the EU Saved My Life: CLEPA joins campaign in support of future EU vehicle safety standards

CLEPA is pleased to support ambitious safety standards through European legislation. We believe that the revision of the General Safety Regulation is a major step toward reaching EU road safety targets and a significant reduction of road casualties. Therefore, CLEPA has joined a new campaign in support of future EU vehicle safety standards, called “Last Night the EU Saved My Life”. The campaign, largely running on social media across Europe, was launched by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC).

In the run-up to crucial votes by EU industry ministers and in the European Parliament, the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) has launched a new social media campaign in support of future EU vehicle safety standards.

In May this year, the European Commission announced a significant proposal to upgrade mandatory vehicle safety standards for all new cars, vans, lorries and buses sold in the EU.  The combination of new standards and technologies could save 25,000 lives in the EU between 2022 and 2037 according to an official study. Minimum EU safety standards for new vehicles have gone largely unchanged since 2009.

In particular, the campaign emphasises the importance of safer car and lorry fronts and the life-saving potential of advanced driver assistance technologies such as Automated Emergency Braking (AEB) and Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA).

In its new campaign, with the slogan “Last Night the EU Saved My Life”, ETSC is asking EU policymakers, national governments, campaigners and the public to join its call to support the entire package of vehicle safety measures proposed by the European Commission.

CLEPA’s view: Swift adoption of the General Safety Regulation could save many lives

The revision of the General Safety Regulation promises an important step towards reaching EU road safety targets and a significant reduction of road casualties. CLEPA strongly supports and urges the review of the General Safety Regulation as a driver to further implement vehicle technical requirements, with the aim of increasing vigorously vehicle safety performances.

CLEPA urges the timely conclusion of the revision of the General Safety Regulation as the main driver for achieving the EU road safety targets in 2020 and encourages members of the European Parliament and the governments of the Member States to work towards a swift completion of the co-decision procedure within the current legislative period. However, as we have highlighted recently, given the number of incomplete dossiers in the legislative debate, there is a manifest risk, that the revision of the regulation may not be adopted before the end of the legislative period.
