EU and ASEAN exchange knowledge and best practices in road safety
The European Commission hosted the first road safety workshop between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Brussels from 30 January to 1 February 2019. The event provided a valuable networking opportunity for road safety experts with a view to future cooperation. Road safety is a field where ASEAN countries have shown willingness to learn from the European experience, as well as strengthening their regional cooperation.
The event brought together senior transport officials and experts from EU and ASEAN countries to broaden understanding of road safety policies and strategies in both regions. Greater understanding will make it easier for countries to identify the best solutions to the current road safety challenges.
Two new studies on the safety performance of Southeast Asia countries were presented, highlighting key gaps in their road systems, and possible measures to improve road safety records. ASEAN representatives were also able to visit the VIAS Institute, Belgium’s road safety knowledge centre, where they could explore innovative approaches in road safety research.
The event was supported by the E-READI programme (Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument), which facilitates the exchange of knowledge and experience between the EU and ASEAN across a broad range of policy areas.
