EU adopts standards for safe and secure parking areas for lorry drivers

The European Commission has adopted a delegated act to support the development of safe and secure parking areas throughout the EU. The act, aiming at improving resting conditions for drivers and protecting them from possible crimes, will enter into force if neither the European Parliament nor the Council raise an objection in the next two months.

The new EU standard will create four categories of parking: Bronze, Silver Gold and Platinum. The purpose of this new categorisation is to provide drivers with choice based on the value of the goods they are transporting.

The standard is defined by the security of the perimeter, parking area, entry/exit points and staff procedures. Moreover, regardless of the level of security, parking areas will have to ensure that truck drivers have access to facilities such as toilets, showers, food and beverage purchasing facilities and an internet connection.
