The European Union has officially published the world’s first regulatory standard for Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) technology. ISA is an advanced safety feature that warns the driver when the vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit and will be mandatory for new type-approvals from July 2022.  

The ISA systems rely on various input methods, such as camera observation and map data, and to recognise real-world speed limit signs. The regulation allows different feedback methodologies that are comparably safe and effective despite their functional differences.  

From 2022, the European Union will have the world’s strictest vehicle safety standards, making mandatory such systems as Advanced Emergency Braking (AEB), Emergency Lane Keeping Assist (ELKS), drowsiness and distraction recognition or Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA). And by 2024, every new car sold in the EU will need to be fitted with these technologies.
