Cooperation between automotive industry and regions is crucial to ensure a successful sector transformation

Together with political leaders from European regions, CLEPA participated in the Green Transformation Summit during the EU’s Week of Regions and Cities

In the framework of the European Week of Regions and Cities, the Committee of the Regions Automotive Intergroup (CoRAI) organised the Green Transformation Summit. The European Commissioner for Budget and Administration Johannes Hahn, political leaders from different European regions, and automotive industry representatives joined the online session on the 14th of October to discuss the role automotive regions play in achieving a successful transformation.

In his opening speech of the Green Transformation Summit, Commissioner Johannes Hahn underlined that “Europe’s regions are at the heart of the green and digital transitions and the EU recovery plan. It is the SMEs, the European value chains and the European industry that will trigger innovations, create employment and boost the economic growth in Europe.”

The pandemic situation that we are currently living has hit the automotive and supply industries. The representatives participating in this summit stressed the importance of innovation and cooperation between the industry and the European regions to keep on leading the necessary green transformation.

“Europe should make full use of its strengths, reinforcing its competitiveness, supporting its advanced technology competence and autonomy while securing its high value industrial base and employment, “ stated Sigrid de Vries, CLEPA Secretary General, in her speech presenting the automotive supply industry’s perspective. “The key question remains not if, but how to achieve the objectives, securing innovation, manufacturing and employment in Europe as well as reaching the climate goals.”

“The automotive supply industry is delivering essential solutions to make the green and digital transformation of mobility a reality. COVID-19 has accelerated the change but also caused a lot of additional strain, not least on employment levels. Europe needs a strong automotive ecosystem to stay competitive and push ahead with ambitious environmental, digital and road safety targets. We need a policy framework at all levels – regional, national, European – that is technology open and supports innovation as much as possible,” summarised de Vries.
