CLEPA participated in the Circular Plastics Alliance Steering Committee to discuss R&D needs for the EU

On 30th April, CLEPA joined the Circular Plastics Alliance steering committee meeting. The Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA) is an initiative under the European Strategy for Plastics (2018), launched by the European Commission to help plastic value chains boost the EU market for recycled plastics to 10 million tonnes by 2025. At the meeting, public and private stakeholders gathered to discuss the latest the R&D agenda and needs.

Research and Development (R&D) projects – along the plastic value chains – are an integral part of the CPA programme. Considering the timeline until 2025, the nature of R&D needs is shorter-term. However, members of the alliance feel confident the R&D Agenda will deliver the necessary methods to achieve the goal of recycled plastics to 10 million tonnes. The CPA R&D Agenda will be updated as the drive and collaboration of the CPA grows and develops over time. In this respect the ‘mapping of the investment and funding needs’, or analysis of the ‘untapped potential in collection, sorting and recycling’, both scheduled for early 2021, could provide further insights in the R&D Needs of the CPA.

Between September 2019 and March 2020, the CPA signatories have met in market oriented working groups to identify and confirm the R&D needs collectively building the CPA R&D Agenda, which has led to a strong cohesion of R&D needs across the five main CPA value chains. The two specific points, currently being developed as an outcome of these meetings are:

  • The STRATEGIC R&D NEEDS;
  • The market SPECIFIC R&D NEEDS.

And as an aftermath, the CPA will develop workplans, define required competencies, capabilities and funding needs, close identified gaps and start R&D projects.

We invite non-signatories to join the CPA, collaborate in the R&D program defined to boost the EU market for recycled plastics to 10 million tonnes by 2025.
