Council Register – Road safety endorsing the Valletta Declaration

On 2 December 2010, the Council adopted Conclusions on the road safety policy for the next decade. Among other points, Council underlined the need to give special attention to reducing the number of injured people in road accidents, supporting the aim of a specific quantitative reduction target based on a common definition of “injured people”.

Work carried out at expert level on a common definition and on a common statistical method has led to the first EU-wide estimation of the number of seriously injured in road accidents for the year 2014 (135 000 cases).

At the Council meetings of 7 June 2016 and 1 December 2016, the Commission expressed its concerns at the overall road safety performance across the EU and drew the attention of the Council to the evident lack of sufficient progress with regard to road fatalities. The Commission also outlined its position on the way forward for reducing the number of persons seriously injured in road accidents. Furthermore, on 7 June 2016, the Czech delegation informed Council about a regional conference and declaration on improving road safety.
